So I wanted to write a little something.. many of you may have noticed I've gone to Patreon and am spamming that in front of you a lot. A few things happened on DA recently that got me bummed out.
Firstly, I had this amazing commissioner who was really enthusiastic, encouraging and would make me feel great about wanting to get better at art. I found that it was really exciting actually working on a commission, because it added a bit of welcome pressure. Having to actually do something that somebody else has paid money to see means you want it to be of a certain quality so you put effort in to it. Can't be a crappy little scribble you just throw out there when you're charging a rate!
So that was the good part. Then I wanted to do a few rewards for people who have been watching and following me for some time - I sent some IMs asking who their fave characters were and so on. This was also fun! But then something really damn weird happened... on top of the usual "Do you do free requests?" that I'm sure everyone gets, I started to get people actually chasing me up on these free requests. That was when it started to get less fun. I'm not a horrible person so I don't like having to put my foot down on such things. When I do - it's quite draining.
Shortly after this, I got this really weird message saying "Can you do me a little favor?". I replied asking what that was... in came the words a second time. I then got a reply asking for me to IM a bunch of people saying various things. Looks like this guy had got himself in trouble with some people and caused a bit of drama. First, I politely reply something along the lines of "Sorry, not getting involved in that". After this, I get a follow up begging me to send notes to these 10 or so people on his behalf. All these people are involved in vore somehow. Lets just say my spidey sense was tingling and something wasn't right. At first it seemed like one of those horrid deep-web creepy pastas that you just dont want to get sucked in to! But on investigation, looks like the guy just has a few screws loose, or is perhaps a bit on the younger side. Turns out this guy also seemed to want to find an artist to do incredibly detailed art for free. I suggested he seek help and not to contact me again, since this was not something I wanted to be a part of. It was bordering on harassment. This was unpleasant for me to do. Overall the whole thing was a bit creepy and I nearly trashed my whole DA again to go in to hiding. This time, of course, I didn't.
So for a while this really bugged me and drawing this stuff wasn't really fun. You'll see this in my sketches... they went from being colorful and funny to kinda rushed and crappy. So I thought back to what was fun? Well, doing the commissions was really fun. Doing surprise things for specific people, because I like their stuff. See, what it comes down to really is a desire to please people. Everyone likes to be told they've done a good job, or that their art is good - but at the core of it is a satisfaction of providing entertainment/joy to someone else. The fact that people like my stuff enough to pay for it never ceases to amaze me and it encourages me to get better. As I have alluded to, I do have a SFW account with some high quality paintings on, but this is all stuff that I've learned recently. Commissions here and the encouragement I've gotten has been a big part of that.
So for me, Patreon is a nice way of doing this. Any time I get an email saying XXXX has just pledged $1! (or in a recent case, even more!) - That makes me smile. I like smiling! Also, it's cheaper than paying monthly for a comic and I really hope to eventually be able to justify doing comics (and animations like I said!!) on a regular basis and dedicate the time to doing them. You know, with actual stories and stuff! I'm not really sure what kinda rewards to set up.
I do want to say though, this strange kink we have of damsels in distress - I like to keep it light and goofy. It's really harmless fun with cartoon characters. So I won't do anything like "Pay X to get access to hard vore"... that's just not really my vibe.
Anyway, hope this answers any questions! If not, let me know!
